Islamabad: Several clerics have issued fatwas against former Pakistani minister Sherry Rehman and declared her an infidel for calling for changes in the blasphemy law, prompting civil society activists to register a complaint with police in the port city of Karachi today.
Media reports said the imam of Sultan Masjid, one of Karachi's biggest mosques, declared Rehman a 'kaafir' (infidel) and 'wajib-ul-qatl' (fit to be killed) while delivering a sermon after the Friday prayers.
The mosque has close ties to the Saudi Arabian government.
Islamic hardliners who organised a massive rally in Karachi today also issued a pamphlet that named Rehman as a person who "has invoked the religious honour of Pakistan's Muslims" for calling for changes in the blasphemy law.
The threats came days after a police guard gunned down Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer for criticising the blasphemy law.
Civil society activists today filed a complaint against the imam of Sultan Masjid at the Darakhsan police station in Karachi.
The complaint was registered on behalf of Rehman, a senior leader of the Pakistan People's Party, Salmaan Taseer's son Shaan Taseer and journalist Ali Chishti.
In the complaint, the civil society activists alleged that the imam of Sultan Masjid had also lauded Mumtaz Qadri, the policeman who assassinated Salmaan Taseer.
Chishti told the media that civil society groups feared for Rehman's life following the murder of the Punjab Governor.
Despite the MCA and Gerakan rushing to condemn PAS for restating its long-standing aspiration to introduce hudud law in Kelantan, Christians leaders say there was nothing with such a plan. In fact, all followers of any religion should be encouraged to strive to strengthen their faith, so long as they did not impinge on the rights of others.
The civil society activists said they were proud to be Muslims but rejected murdering people in the name of Islam.
Their safety depends on shoring up their credentials as good Muslims -- lest they also become lawful for slaughter as apostates -- but even this won't be enough for those in Pakistan who want to silence all criticism of Islamic law.

Hardliners have been gunning for Rehman since she tabled a private bill in parliament to remove the mandatory death sentence for blasphemy.
Reports have said Rehman has been facing pressure from within the PPP to leave Pakistan for her own security.
Security has been enhanced at Rehman's residence in Karachi and she has told the media she will not leave Pakistan.
"
That is the most important thing, to ensure that the rights of other faiths are fully protected. Then what is wrong with hudud in Kelantan or any other state for that matter?" Ramon Navaratnam, past president of Transparency International and a lay Christian leader, told Malaysia Chronicle.

"We should not politicize everything especially religion. It is perfectly natural for a Muslim and a Christian or a Buddhist and a Hindu to strive to strengthen their faith as much as they can and this should be encouraged. It is only wrong when they lose sight of others and start to become extremists in their conduct and practice. So long as the non-Muslims in Malaysia are completely protected, Christians and all other Malaysians should not be narrow-minded and fear for no proper reason."

Ramon's statement is supported by the president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Malaysia, Dr Paul Tan Chee Ing.

“I say it's time to allow Muslims in Kelantan, if they so desire, to implement shariah only for them and with that the hudud enactments provided non-Muslims are exempt from its implementation,” said Paul, who is also the titular head of Catholics in the Melaka-Johor diocese.

MCA and Gerakan say NO!

The remarks of the Christian leaders contrast sharply with those from MCA president Chua Soi Lek and Gerakan's Koh Tsu Koon, both of whom raised heated objections, although their reasons for doing so were not clear.

“MCA’s stand is very clear. We will object strongly to hudud. If Umno wants to implement hudud, we will pull MCA out of Barisan Nasional - simple as that. Our stand is very clear. Umno wants to implement hudud, MCA is no party to it, we’ll get out of it," Soi Lek told reporters on Friday.

"We're a country with a Muslim majority but with a significant non-Muslim minority. The basic structure of our constitution preserves this diversity, and that's why our punitive laws are secular and applies to everyone. We can't have different sets of laws for each section of society," Gerakan deputy president Chang Ko Youn said in a statement.

What about Muslim rights then?

However, as Muslims have pointed out, both the Chinese-based politicians may be doing exactly what they are accusing PAS of - impinging on the rights of others.

"Have MCA and Gerakan thought about the feelings of the Muslims. Hudud is for Muslims only. Many of us want to be tried under hudud because we want to be good followers. Why should MCA and Gerakan stop us? Look at Syariah law, it is already in practice in the country and it has not affected non-Muslims, so why the abnormal fear of hudud," PAS MP for Shah Alam Khalid Samad told Malaysia Chronicle.

Khalid also blasted Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin for saying that Umno supported hudud but the country was not ready to implement it.

"We are not ready as a nation for hudud, that is true. But that is also due to Umno collaborating with MCA and Gerakan and their other component parties to smear hudud, to make the non-Muslims and even some Muslims frightened of it. If Umno and BN had not politicised hudud, it would be much easier to educate the general public about it. If your look at the religious leaders, they have no problems because they understand religion. It is the politicians who are creating havoc," said Khalid.

Kelantan

Hudud is arm of the Muslim law that pertains to 6 criminal prosecutions, and is feared because it prescribes punishment that includes stoning to death, the amputation of limbs and whipping. The 6 hudud crimes are theft, highway robbery, illegal sexual intercourse, false accusations of zina or adultlery, drinking alcohol and apostasy.

Within Pakatan, Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim who is also PKR de-facto chief, is supportive of hudud and sees no reason why Kelantan should not implement it as long as the rights of the non-Muslims are fully protected. DAP is however against the idea.

This situation in Pakatan is nothing new and the three partners have said it many times. If PAS wants to introduce hudud law or an Islamic state, it must have sufficient majority either in the state or federal government to do so. Neither PKR nor DAP will be bound to support it on such a motion. In Kelantan, which has less than 10 per cent non-Malays in its population, PAS has sufficient majority.

However, Mentri Besar Nik Aziz Nik Mat is unable to do because the federal government under ex-premier Mahathir Mohamad had previously issued a letter barring it from putting through the hudud plan. Nik Aziz has challenged current prime minister, Najib Razak, to rescind the letter, but so far, there has been no respons

If MCA and Gerakan do not wish to be regarded as mere gasbags, they must leave BN now as they have promised to, if coalition boss Umno implemented a Syariah Penal Code consisting of Islamic hudud laws under the BN ruled states.

According to PAS vice president Mahfuz Omar, hudud laws were gazetted in Terengganu by the BN when it took over the state government following the 2004 general election.

The PAS state government under the then Mentri Besar Hadi Awang had only reached the stage where hudud was passed at the state assembly before his administration was booted out.

"If MCA and Gerakan do not deliver what they preach, clearly both parties are just lying to the Chinese community who are their main voters. No wonder, their support is slipping becaue they telling one lie after another," Mahfuz told Malaysia Chronicle.

Mahfuz, who is also the MP for Pokok Sena, warned MCA and Gerakan not to wriggle out from their public statements. He pointed out that when the Bill was debated in the assembly, Umno representatives had also voted in its favor.

"For the proposal to pass, it had to be supported by the members of the Terengganu state assembly including the assemblymen from Umno. In fact, if members from UMNO didn't support it, the proposal would not have passed," said Mahfuz.

The Palestinian Statehood Does Obama Face a Racial Double Standard?

President Barack Obama, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu all played mainly to their domestic political bases at the United Nations General Assembly meeting last week. Despite the drama, nothing in the basic discourse has changed, no party shifted its bottom-line positions, and none of it brought us any closer to peace or improved the situation on the ground.

Abbas gave a rousing speech articulating the Palestinian narrative and case for independence, but didn't offer any outreach to the Israeli public. Netanyahu gave a defiantspeech, including denouncing the UN as a "house of lies" aimed mainly at securing his leadership of the Israeli right. And Obama -- who offered empathy to Israel and the Jewish narrative but none to the Palestinians -- was essentially defending himself from a relentless attack from the Republican right on his Israel policies.

All three leaders emerged from the UN meeting politically strengthened, but the prospects for peace were not. Netanyahu marshaled Israel's international assets to nip the Palestinian bid for full UN membership in the bud. The application will no doubt be referred to the 15-member Membership Committee, which meets and votes in secret and which requires unanimity to refer the application back to the Security Council for a possible vote. Past precedent shows this process can take years. Even if Palestinians decide to push for a vote in the Security Council, and can secure an at-present uncertain nine-vote majority, the Obama administration is publicly committed to vetoing their membership.

Caught between the rock of Israeli occupation and the hard place of (at least thus far) failed diplomacy, the Palestinian leadership sought recourse at the UN, knowing full well they were risking a damaging confrontation with the United States over a potential veto. By submitting a formal application for full UN membership, Abbas may appear to have taken a confrontational approach, but in fact the Palestinians have left an important opportunity for compromise open by not demanding any immediate vote or action.

That opportunity is best represented by the statement of the Middle East Quartet issued to coincide with the Abbas and Netanyahu speeches. It is clear that the Quartet has not resolved its differences which have emerged over the past year, particularly the question of Palestinian recognition of Israel as a "Jewish state," but this body remains the most promising venue for creating a new framework, and even terms of reference, for future negotiations when political realities adjust to allow for their resumption with a reasonable prospect of success.

While the resumption of such negotiations will depend a great deal on improvements in internal Palestinian and Israeli political conditions, and especially on the resolution and outcome of the US presidential election, it is imperative that the prospects for a genuine two-state solution are preserved, and even enhanced. To achieve peace, Israelis and Palestinians must move beyond binary worldviews that cast each other simply as enemies in order to appreciate the complexity and interdependence of their relationship, not only now but into the future.

This means, first and foremost, preserving, protecting and enhancing the gains made on the ground in the occupied West Bank by the Palestinian institution-building program led by Prime Minister Salam Fayyad. Many members of Congress from both parties and Republican presidential candidates have been irresponsibly calling for a cut in US funding to the Palestinian Authority and any international organizations that accord upgraded status to the Palestinians.

Nothing could be more shortsighted than threats by grandstanding members of Congress to cut US aid to the PA, the single biggest source of external funding for the Palestinians, which would undermine the legitimacy of the moderate, secular, nationalist leadership in Ramallah and ultimately threaten the viability of both negotiations and negotiators.

It would jeopardize the important cooperation between Israeli and Palestinian security forces that has greatly reduced violence and restore law and order in some key areas of the West Bank. It could undermine, perhaps fatally, the credibility not just of individual political leaders but the whole Palestinian national strategy that seeks the establishment of an independent state living alongside Israel in peace, security and mutual dignity. And it would play directly into the hands of rejectionists forces like Hamas and the extreme settler movement that cling to a zero-sum mentality that seek a total victory of one party at the expense of the other.

It is evident that the status quo is untenable, the conflict has no military solution, and a negotiated agreement is the only alternative to continued conflict. The Israeli occupation must end and, in turn, Israel must become an accepted member of the community of nations in the Middle East. No Israeli, we hope, wants to occupy another people and no Palestinian, we believe, wants to be occupied. The few benefits the Israelis accrue from occupation (e.g., arable land, settlements, water resources) can be better secured through long-term arrangements with friendly neighboring countries, including a State of Palestine. Real "strategic depth" doesn't come from belligerent occupation. It comes from an end of conflict.

Even though the presidential campaign is underway, Obama and his team should not shrink from urging Israeli and Palestinian leaders to do the right thing and resume negotiations within a specific time frame and with clear terms of reference, which becomes the basis of a just and lasting peace. The Quartet statement was a welcome indication that serious diplomacy continues and a reasonable framework for resumed negotiations can be developed in the coming weeks, even if the actual resumption of talks may have to wait for a more propitious political environment on all sides.

Abbas and Netanyahu have returned to their countries with stronger political positions and therefore more leverage and leeway to take bold moves that help lay the political groundwork for the resumption of talks aimed at a fair compromise.

Regardless of what transpires at the UN with respect to Palestine's membership, it must become the impetus towards increased commitment on the part of the international community to finally fulfill the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people and the yearning of Israelis for peace and security. The parties cannot accomplish this on their own.

Now is the time for leaders on all sides to rise above politics and use their strengthened positions to begin the difficult, and probably prolonged, process for creating a more positive political environment that can eventually produce successful negotiations. Above all, the gains that have been secured on the ground through the Palestinian institution-building program and Israeli-Palestinian security cooperation -- which are real and not theoretical -- must not be squandered, but protected and enhanced.

Chiefly relying on a twisted interpretation of the above verses in their scripture, the Zionists claim that God's eternal covenant with Abraham and his descendants means that Israel must have undivided political sovereignty over all the land mentioned there, which according to them stretches from the Nile in Egypt to the Euphrates in Iraq.

In fact, this Zionist claim is erroneous from the Bible's own point of view, because God's covenant was given to Abraham and to all his descendants; not merely to Israel. Abraham is 'the father of many nations', not only one nation as can be seen from the following:

Then Abram fell on his face; and God said to him, "Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come forth from you." (Genesis 17:3-6)

We know that the Bible speaks of Abraham's two sons: His firstborn was Ishmael, and the second was Isaac. The Arabs are the children of Ishmael and the Jews are the children of Isaac. The mother of Abraham's son Ishmael was Hajar the Egyptian, who had received a covenant promise:

"I will so increase your descendants that they will be too numerous to count." (Genesis 16:1-15)

"Those descendants were Arabs, settling in Arab territory." (Genesis 25:13-18)

But the Zionists argue that only the children of Isaac deserve to live in the Land promised to the Children of Abraham; because Ishmael's mother Hajar was only a handmaiden of Sarah, so (they say) her children have no right to their homeland.

(Sarah) was childless for many years. She gave her handmaiden Hagar to Abraham so he could have children, and Hagar bore Ishmael. At the age of ninety, Sarah was told she would give birth and she laughed because she thought she was too old to have children. Sarah gave birth to Isaac (Yitzhak). Later Sarah drove Hagar and Ishmael away, saying "the son of this hand-maiden will not inherit together with my son, Yitzchak." (Bereshit 21:10)

The above claim of Zionism is deliberately aimed at denying their Arab brethren any right to the land of their birth. "If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they have borne him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son be hers that was hated: then it shall be, when he maketh his sons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated, which is indeed the firstborn: but he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his." (Deuteronomy 21: 15-17)

It is obvious here that the status of the mother of the firstborn does not in any way disqualify him from inheriting his rights (which is the double of what the other son gets, according to this provision) from his father. But the Jews as well as some sects of Christians sideline this simple rule of the Torah, just for denying the Palestinians the right to the land which God gave them as well as to their brethren, the Children of Isaac (or Children of Israel).

The Jews believed in the superiority of their race, because they thought that their status as the 'Chosen People of God' could mean nothing else. The Quran (though it has sometimes been criticized by some Jews as anti-Semitic very clearly states that the Children of Israel are the Chosen People of God. But the Quran clearly denies the claim that this means that God will consider the Jews as His favorites in derogation of others. Their special status only means that God chose them as the special carriers of His Message; for He chose from them a large number of prophets, for instance.

As a community of people, the Jews were unmindful of the mission entrusted with them, and compared to others they were very 'casual' in the matter of obedience to God and His prophets. (Exodus 32:1- 9) The way the Jews treated their prophets could be understood from the experiences of those prophets, as described in the Old Testament of the Bible. Muslims and probably Christians too would say that this was the reason why God made them undergo severe hardships again and again.

The point to be made here is that the Jews, Christians and Muslims are all followers of the same religious tradition; and those in the Middle East irrespective of their religion are the Children of Abraham, whether through Ishmael or Isaac. Neither the Jew, nor the Christian nor the Muslim can deny this, since it is clearly stated in their respective scriptures. One may find in this a ray of hope for the settlement of the Middle East crisis. But of course, when the politics of racial or tribal pride or what could be crudely put as "herd instinct" rules, things get worse and worse as it happens now.

The People, the Land and the Torah

It was in the 19th century, following a trend that began earlier in Europe, people around the world began to identify themselves as citizens, parts of a 'nation-state' project, and to demand national rights. At this time, the Jews living as citizens of different countries for centuries could have remained in their respective countries, as the Christians and Muslims were doing. But two factors conspired against this. One, their consciousness of the Promised Land to which the Jewish fundamentalists had been calling all Jews to return; and two, the bitterness they felt against the lands where they had been treated as outcasts so far. (Karen Armstrong, The Battle for God, Harper Collins, London, 2001, p. 150)

The Zionist movement began in 1882, with the intention of recovering what they thought to be the land 'exclusively' promised to the Jews by God. The extremists among them believed that they could live as real Jews only if they practiced all the laws in the Torah. This would be possible 'only' if they returned to the Promised Land; because otherwise the laws regarding farming and settlement, and politics and government could not be observed, for instance. (Karen Armstrong, The Battle for God, p. 258)

The question that comes to the fore here is whether God actually wants us humans to uphold values of justice and truth in everything, while He supports His Chosen people to defy them in the matter of their unfortunate brethren. Of course, the Jews have always been able to find precedents in their own history to support their unjust policies (for instance the Book of Joshua, where Jehovah is reported to have supported a very brutal war against the Gentiles, to take away their land, their property and their lives). (Joshua 10:25)

The Zionist movement identified Palestine as the place for their new nation and started a wave of immigration from Europe for settlement there. At that time, Palestine was part of the Ottoman Empire. According to Ottoman records, in 1878 there were 462,465 subject inhabitants of the Jerusalem, Nablus and Acre districts: 403,795 Muslims (including Druze), 43,659 Christians and 15,011 Jews. The great majority of the Arabs (Muslims and Christians) lived in several hundred rural villages. Jaffa and Nablus were the largest and economically most important Arab towns. (The Middle East Research and Information Project: Palestine, Israel and the Arab-Israeli Conflict)

Until the beginning of the 20th century, most Jews living in Palestine observed traditional, orthodox religious practices, spending their time studying religious texts. Their attachment to the land was 'religious' rather than 'national', and they were not involved in the Zionist movement, which began in Europe and was brought to Palestine by immigrants.

Most of the Jews who immigrated from Europe lived a more secular lifestyle and were committed to the goals of creating a Jewish nation and building a modern, independent Jewish state. Zionism, or Jewish nationalism "was influenced by nationalist ideology, and by colonial ideas about Europeans' rights to claim and settle other parts of the world." (The Middle East Research and Information Project: Palestine, Israel and the Arab-Israeli Conflict) But at the same time, the secular Zionists were cunning enough to make use of the religious fervor of the fundamentalists.

For fundamentalist Jews, the land and the people and the Torah formed a triad, each of which is holy. They considered it a religious duty to annex and occupy all the Promised Land(the borders of which God alone knows), no matter who owns it now. (The Middle East Research and Information Project: Palestine, Israel and the Arab-Israeli Conflict) They believe that in this effort Jehovah is with them, as He was with Joshua. For this reason, to the Israelis world criticisms against their atrocities, or the UN resolutions against occupation of Arab lands, do not matter, whatsoever.

Is not it a paradox that the Jews who were the victims of a racial holocaust are now inflicting a similar racial holocaust on the Palestinians? When the Zionist leaders accuse the Palestinians of religious fundamentalism and terrorism, the whole of "the civilized world" believe them. But really, who could be more fundamentalist or more terrorist than the Zionists who openly encroach on Arab lands, demolish Arab homes, kill Arab men, women and children in the name of Jehovah?

The Israeli government's current mantra is that the Palestinians must recognise a "Jewish State". Of course, the Palestinians have clearly and repeatedly recognised the State of Israel as such in the 1993 Oslo Accords (which were based on an Israeli promise to establish a Palestinian state within five years - a promise now shattered) and many times since. Recently, however, Israeli leaders have dramatically and unilaterally moved the goal-posts and are now clamouring that Palestinians must recognise Israel as a "Jewish State".

In 1946, the Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry concluded that the demand for a "Jewish State" was not part of the obligations of the Balfour Declaration or the British Mandate. Even in the First Zionist Congress in Basel in 1897, when Zionists sought to "establish a home for the Jewish people", there was no reference of a "Jewish State". The Zionist Organisation preferred at first to use the description "Jewish homeland" or "Jewish Commonwealth". Many pioneering Zionist leaders, such as Judah Magnes and Martin Buber also avoided the clear and explicit term "Jewish State" for their project of a homeland for Jews, and preferred instead the concept of a democratic bi-national state.

Today, however, demands for a "Jewish State" from Israeli politicians are growing without giving thought to what this might mean, and its supporters claim that it would be as natural as calling France a French State. However, if we consider the subject dispassionately, the idea of a "Jewish State" is logically and morally problematic because of its legal, religious, historical and social implications. The implications of this term therefore need to be spelled out, and we are sure that once they are, most people - and most Israeli citizens, we trust - will not accept these implications.

Many implications

First, let us say that confusion immediately arises here because the term "Jewish" can be applied both to the ancient race of Israelites and their descendants, as well as to those who believe in and practice the religion of Judaism. These generally overlap, but not always. For example, some ethnic Jews are atheists and there are converts to Judaism (leaving aside the question of whether these are accepted as such by Ultra-Orthodox Jews) who are not ethnic Jews.

Second, let us suggest also that having a modern nation-state being defined by one ethnicity or one religion is problematic in itself - if not inherently self-contradictory - because the modern nation-state as such is a temporal and civic institution, and because no state in the world is - or can be in practice - ethnically or religiously homogenous.

Third, recognition of Israel as a "Jewish state" implies that Israel is, or should be, either a theocracy (if we take the word "Jewish" to apply to the religion of Judaism) or an apartheid state (if we take the word "Jewish" to apply to the ethnicity of Jews), or both, and in all of these cases, Israel is then no longer a democracy - something which has rightly been the pride of most Israelis since the country's founding in 1948.

Fourth, at least one in five Israelis - 20 per cent of the population, according to the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics - is ethnically Arab (and are mostly either Muslim, Christian, Druze or Bahai), and recognising Israel as a "Jewish State" as such makes one-fifth of the population of Israel automatically strangers in their own native land and opens the door to legally reducing them, most undemocratically, to second-class citizens (or perhaps even stripping them of their citizenship and other rights) - something that no-one, much less a Palestinian leader, has a right to do.

Fifth, recognising a "Jewish State" as such in Israel would mean legally that while Palestinians no longer have citizens' rights there, any member of world Jewry outside of Israel (up to 10 million people perhaps), should be entitled to full citizens' rights there, no matter wherever they may be in the world today and regardless of their current nationality. Indeed, Israel publicly admits that it does not hold the land for the benefit of its citizens but holds it, in trust, on behalf of the Jews of the world for all time. This is something that happens in practice, but that obviously Palestinians in the occupied territories - including Jerusalem - do not see as fair, especially as they are constantly forcibly evicted off their ancestral homeland by Israel to make way for foreign Jewish settlers, and because Palestinians in their diaspora are denied the same right to come and live.

Sixth, it means, before final status negotiations have even started, that Palestinians would have then given up the rights of about 7 million Palestinians in the diaspora to repatriation or compensation; 7 million Palestinians descended from the Palestinians who in 1900 lived in historical Palestine (ie what is now Israel, the West Bank including Jerusalem, and Gaza) and at that time made up 800,000 of its 840,000 inhabitants; and who were driven off their land through war, violent eviction or fear.

Seventh, recognising a "Jewish state" in Israel - a state which purports to annex the whole of Jerusalem, East and West, and calls Jerusalem its "eternal, undivided capital" (as if the city, or even the world itself, were eternal; as if it were really undivided, and as if it actually were legally recognised by the international community as Israel's capital) - means completely ignoring the fact that Jerusalem is as holy to 2.2 billion Christians and 1.6 billion Muslims, as it is to 15-20 million Jews worldwide.

In other words, this would be to privilege Judaism above the religions of Christianity and Islam, whose adherents together comprise 55 per cent of the world's population. Regrettably this is a narrative propagated even by renowned Jewish author and Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, who, on April 15, 2010, took out full page ads in The New York Timesand The Washington Post and claimed that Jerusalem "is mentioned more than six hundred times in Scripture - and not a single time in the Qur'an". Now we do not propose to speak for native Palestinian Arab Christians - except to say the that Jerusalem is quite obviously the city of Jesus Christ the Messiah - but as Muslims, we believe that Jerusalem is not the "third holiest city of Islam" as is sometimes claimed, but simply one of Islam's three holy cities. And, of course, despite what Mr Wiesel seems to believe, Jerusalem is indeed clearly referred to in the Holy Qur'an in Surat al-Isra' (17:1):

"Glorified be He Who transported His servant by night from the Inviolable Place of Worship to the Aqsa Place of Worship whose precincts We have blessed, that We might show him of Our tokens! Lo! He, only He, is the Hearer, the Seer."

Moreover, Muslims wanting to take a similar, religiously exclusive narrative, could point out that while Jerusalem is mentioned 600 times in the Bible, it is not mentioned once in the Torah as such - a fact that any Biblical Concordance will easily confirm. Of course we do, however, recognise the importance of the land of Israel in the religion of Judaism - this is even mentioned in the Qur'an, 5:21 - we only ask that the Israeli government reciprocate this courtesy and allow Muslims to speak for themselves in expressing what they consider, and have always considered, as holy to them.

There is another reason, more serious than all of the seven mentioned above, why Palestinian leaders - and indeed no responsible person - can morally recognise Israel as a "Jewish State" as such. It has to do with the very Covenant of God in the Bible with Ancient Israelites of the promise of a homeland for Jews. God says to Abraham in the Bible:

On the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying:

"To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates - the Kenites, the Kenezzites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites." (Genesis, 15:18-21; NKJ)

The ancient Israelites then go on to possess this land in the time of Moses, upon God's command, as follows:

"When the LORD your God brings you into the land which you go to possess, and has cast out many nations before you, the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than you, and when the LORD your God delivers them over to you, you shall conquer them and utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them nor show mercy to them. (Deuteronomy, 7:1-2; NKJ)

"Hear, O Israel: You are to cross over the Jordan today, and go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to heaven, a people great and tall, the descendants of the Anakim, whom you know, and of whom you heard it said: 'Who can stand before the descendants of Anak?' Therefore understand today that the LORD your God is He who goes over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them and bring them down before you; so you shall drive them out and destroy them quickly, as the LORD has said to you." (Deuteronomy, 9:1-4; NKJ)

The fate of many of the original inhabitants is then as follows:

And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, ox and sheep and donkey, with the edge of the sword. (Joshua, 6:21; NKJ)

And this continues even later on in time, as follows:

Samuel also said to Saul: "The LORD sent me to anoint you king over His people, over Israel. Now therefore, heed the voice of the words of the LORD. Thus says the LORD of hosts: 'I will punish Amalek for what he did to Israel, how he ambushed him on the way when he came up from Egypt. Now go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.'" (1 Samuel, 15:1-3; NKJ)

Now it is very easy to cherry-pick quotes from scripture permitting or enjoining violence. One could cite, out of context, verses such as the "sword verse" in the Holy Qur'an:

Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them, and confine them, and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they repent, and establish prayer and pay the alms, then leave their way free. God is Forgiving, Merciful. (Al-Tawbah, 9:5)

One could even cite verses - again out of context - from Jesus Christ's own words in the Gospel, as follows:

"But bring here those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, and slay them before me.'" (Luke, 19:27; NKJ)

"Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword." (Matthew, 10:34; NKJ)
Democracy or a Jewish State?

Nevertheless, it remains true that, in the Old Testament, God commands the Jewish state in the land of Israel to come into being through warfare and violent dispossession of the original inhabitants. Moreover, this command has its roots in the very Covenant of God with Abraham (or rather "Abram" at that time) in the Bible and it thus forms one of the core tenets of Judaism as such, at least as we understand it. No one then can blame Palestinians and descendents of the ancient Canaanites, Jebusites and others who inhabited the land before the Ancient Israelites (as seen in the Bible itself) for a little trepidation as regards what recognising Israel as a "Jewish State" means for them, particularly to certain Orthodox and Ultra Orthodox Jews. No one then can blame Palestinians for asking if recognising Israel as a "Jewish State" means recognising the legitimacy of offensive warfare or violence against them by Israel to take what remains of Palestine from them.

We need hardly say that this comes against a background where every day the Israeli settler movement is grabbing more land in the West Bank and Jerusalem (there are now 500,000 Israeli settlers in the West Bank alone) - aided, abetted, funded and empowered by the current Israeli government - and throwing or forcing more and more Palestinians out, in so many different ways that it would take volumes to describe. Moreover, there are credible reports that despite the almost universal agreement in Rabbinical texts throughout the ages that the divine command to kill the Amalekites was a unique and isolated historical incident that applied only to the race of the Ancient Amalekites, there are now, in certain religious schools in Israel, people who draw parallels between the Palestinians of today and the ancient Amalekites and their like (this was apparently the opinion of Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu, a former chief Rabbi of Israel; see also, for example: Shulamit Aloni's article 'Murder Under the Cover of Righteousness', CounterPunch, March, 8-9, 2003).

In short, recognition of Israel as a "Jewish State" in Israel is not the same as, say, recognition of Greece today as a "Christian State". It entails, in the Old Testament itself, a Covenant between God and a Chosen People regarding a Promised Land that should be taken by force at the expense of the other inhabitants of the land and of non-Jews. This idea is not present as such in other religions that we know of. Moreover, even secular and progressive voices in Israel, such as former president of the Supreme Court of Israel, Aharon Barak, understand the concept of a "Jewish State" as follows:

"[The] Jewish State is the state of the Jewish people … it is a state in which every Jew has the right to return … a Jewish state derives its values from its religious heritage, the Bible is the basic of its books and Israel's prophets are the basis of its morality … a Jewish state is a state in which the values of Israel, Torah, Jewish heritage and the values of the Jewish halacha [religious law] are the bases of its values." ('A State in Emergency', Ha'aretz, 19 June, 2005.)

So, rather than demand that Palestinians recognise Israel as a "Jewish State" as such - adding "beyond chutzpah" to insult and injury - we offer the suggestion that Israeli leaders ask instead that Palestinians recognise Israel (proper) as a civil, democratic, and pluralistic state whose official religion is Judaism, and whose majority is Jewish. Many states (including Israel's neighbours Jordan and Egypt, and countries such as Greece) have their official religion as Christianity or Islam (but grant equal civil rights to all citizens) and there is no reason why Israeli Jews should not want the religion of their state to be officially Jewish. This is a reasonable demand, and it may allay the fears of Jewish Israelis about becoming a minority in Israel, and at the same time not arouse fears among Palestinians and Arabs about being ethnically cleansed in Palestine. Demanding the recognition of Israel's official religion as Judaism, rather than the recognition of Israel as a "Jewish State", would also mean Israel continuing to be a democracy.

This past May, a Kuwaiti activist named Salwa al-Mutairi ignited a firestorm of controversy by suggesting a radical solution to her country’s growing concern about adultery and premarital sex: why not import “sex slaves” to satisfy lustful Muslim men? Her proposal drew a torrent of criticism, but al-Mutairi remained undeterred, and even went a step further by claiming that her idea was Islamically legitimate. Muslims across the world fiercely rejected her proposal, insisting that al-Mutairi was not only wrong, but also ignorant of the basic tenets of Islam. In truth, however, her idea is not nearly as “un-Islamic” as its critics suggest, and their response reflects a widespread inability to engage with the Islamic tradition.

Empowered women in control of household decisions could be losing out on sex, says a new study out ofJohns Hopkins University.

Published in the Journal of Sex in October, the researchers asked women about the last date of sexual intercourse as well as who had the final say on decisions ranging from healthcare to household purchases.

According to the Telegraph, the researchers surveyed women from six African countries who reported the more decisions made, the less physical intimacy they shared with their partners.

"The more decisions a woman reported making on her own, as compared to through joint decision-making, the less likely she was to have sex and the longer it was since she last had sexual intercourse," said lead researcher Michelle Hindin.

The findings showed more dominant and assertive women had approximately 100 times less sex.

But the researchers also noted that this isn't necessarily incidental for them -- it could also be women taking control of their sexual preferences, theDaily Mail reported.

"Understanding how women's position in the household influences their sexual activity may be an essential piece in protecting the sexual rights of women and helping them to achieve a sexual life that is both safe and pleasurable," co-author Carie Muntifering told Health24.com.

The location of the women studied may also have played a role, though. Most recently, a study by Florida State University's Roy Baumeister argued that more equality would lead to more sex. He pointed to a study surveying over 300,000 people from 37 countries which found that countries with a higher gender equality had more casual sex and more sexual partners. In nations with less equality between the sexes, the opposite was true.

Is she saying that women should not voice out their concerns because ultimately, its always their fault anyway? I say WHEN THERE IS A WRONG, SPEAK UP! There are some basic rights that every women must protect. The right to speak is one of them. Never let anybody tell you that what you feel and think doesn’t matter. Never let anybody ever convince you that you are inferior. Unfortunately, you are because of people like Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor whois betraying her very gender. She is supposed to fight for you. Not condemn all those poor victims of rape, harassment, sexual abuse and domestic violence. And you are at FAULT if you yourself do not fight. I am a man. I can only say so much. Do so much.

She added that women should dress decently to avoid attracting unwanted attention from dangerous men.

Her last comments summarizes it succintly. Its time for you to act if you care at all about your safety and rights as a women in Malaysia. Pass the word to everybody you know.

You don’t want to be comfortable here, and the changes in Western society in the last 100 years has achieved just that, decreasing the god’s role in our everyday lives (medicine cures sickness, drought/weather and the family farm, etc).

The gods use all their tools as temptation. Much like Artificial Intelligence misleading people into the concept of “earning”, their “clone hosts” promoting The Beast’s Californication agenda through popular culture, so too are the god’s prophets used in the capacity of temptation. Like the other prophets Mohhamed (polygamy/superiority over women/misogyny) and Jesus (forgiveness/savior), the gods use me for temptation as well. In today’s modern society they feel people are most weak for popular culture/sensationalism, and the clues date back to WorldWarII and Unit731:TSUSHOGO, the Chinese Holocaust. They used this Situation to bury Japanese atrocities. The gods never committed despite tens of billions in mass media, product development and natural disasters/tragedy, so they will enjoy the freedom they positioned into the Situation and CHEAT me out of everything.

It has been discussed that, similar to the Matrix concept, the gods will offer a REAL “Second Coming of Christ”, while the “fake” Second Coming will come at the end and follow New Testiment scripture and their xtian positioning. I may be that real Second Coming.

What I teach is the god’s true way. It is what is expected of people, and only those who follow this truth will be eligible to ascend into heaven as children in a future life. They offered this event because the masses have just enough time to work on and fix their relationship with the gods and ascend, to move and grow past Planet Earth, before the obligatory xtian “consolation prize” of “1000 years with Jesus on Earth” begins.

Condemned to experience another epoch of history for their ignorant pursuit of xtianity and worship of their false god, they will be the candidates used to (re)colonize (the next) Planet Earth, condemned to relive the misery experienced by the peasantry throughout the course of history due to their failure to ascend into heaven before the Apocalypse.

So when/if the Anti-Christ comes along speaking of reverting back to what liberalism would consider regressive and unfair, it may be the only hope to salvage the god’s favor and buy more time rather than begin the 1000 year clock. The gods will offer clues throughout every dynamic of life. Geographical features on the world map is yet another.

The Beast is not a person, as the xtian Bible would suggest. It is a place:::The San Francisco Bay Area. And it refers to the socio-political poison the region exuded in the latter 20th century which promoted indecent behavior among the people and caused rapid deterioration of their favor among the gods. This decay spread to other states and countries, fulfilling the region’s role as The Beast of the Apocalypse.

Another feature which the Gods offer as a clue is very foreboading. Mt. Zion is a mountain to the north of the eye of The Beast Diablo and one which has a working quarry at its base. Consistant with the decay we experience in society, Mt. Zion is being eaten away, slowly stripped of its resources, until one day paradise will be a mere shell of what it once was.

Metaphorically, the Dark Side of the Moon isn’t the side which is hidden from us. The benevolent “Man in the Moon” is the one we never see.

We experience the wickedness of the dark side daily through their actions, using their positioning to midlead the disfavored into Damnation by selling them on “earning”, among other tactics.

Forgiveness aside because it is bullshit lip service, the price of experiencing this modern societal decay is the revision down of potential time received. Because of these factors those who participated have experienced a lowering of the benefit ceiling that was in place. Whereas centuries ago they were eligible for immortality, theoretically, now that potential has dramatically lowered because of their wicked, immoral behavior of the last 50 years. You may work on your relationship with the gods and even repair it, ascending in some future life. But because you fell for such evil temptation in the 20th & 21st centuries you won’t be around nearly as long as your chaste, pure antecedent who ascended centuries before.

If you have got chronic problems you should pray nightly, go back to your place of worship. Only by doing the right things will the gods allow improvement, and only through attonement will they allow progress. You know all the evil you’ve committed in your life. Observing your parent’s issues will help you understand what you’ve done in a prior life, for the gods reincarnate based on this legacy.

A good example of societal decay and how the gods manage their culpability is birth defects. In the past the gods occassionally punished people by divinely creating birth defects in the womb. Now, with the advent of biotechnology, they tempt the mother with “earning” and compell her to take a substance in utero which deforms the fetus, dispelling the gods of blame and future compensation to the disfavored. Incidentally, they use liberal policies in today’s socio-political environment to pay for these individuals, ensuring a lifetime wasted, for they have no hope for progress. Too often in the past they were mercifully killed by loved ones and upon reincarnation brought back without this handicap, allowing them a chance to achieve progress immediately.

Muslim women in particular were understandably some of al-Mutairi’s harshest critics. Muna Khan, editor of Al-Arabiya English, wrote a scathing editorial in which she called al-Mutairi's proposal “idiotic” in light of the fact that the Prophet Muhammad freed slaves and forbade adultery. Muslim author Shelina Janmohamed scoffed at al-Mutairi’s claims, calling them “bonkers,” and “about as representative of Muslim thinking as the Pope is a Muslim.”

Despite having the best of intentions, both Khan and Janmohamed are unaware of a troubling paradox: they can only declare al-Mutairi's ideas "un-Islamic" by dismissing much of the Muslim legal and historical tradition. As shocking or offensive as it may sound, classical scholars took for granted that “ownership” of a woman gave a Muslim man sexual access to her. They did not consider this “adultery,” and most assumed that the Qur'an itself condoned the practice, referring to concubines with the phrase ma malakat aymanukum (“those whom your right hands possess”). In two passages, the Qur’an praises “those who guard their chastity, except with their wives or what their right hands possess,” [1] and other verses use the phrase to describe female slaves in general. [2]

The eminent jurist al-Shafiʻi (d. 820 CE) held that men could take as many concubines as they pleased. [3] Imam Malik (d. 795) ruled that Muslim men could have intercourse with Jewish and Christian slaves, but could not marry them. [4] According to Ahmad bin Hanbal (d. 855), even male slaves could take concubines, [5] and al-Ghazali (d. 1111) approved of men using birth control to prevent their slaves from gaining the rights associated with bearing children. [6] These are not voices from the fray – they are the premier names in Islamic scholarship.

The mention of sex with slaves also appears in the hadith literature (accounts of the Prophet Muhammad’s words and deeds). The Prophet Muhammad is well known for freeing slaves and treating them kindly, but according to many hadiths, he permitted his companions to sleep with their female slaves and captives. [7] The book Sahih Bukhari, possibly the most referenced collection of hadiths in the Muslim canon, contains a report in which a companion of the Prophet discusses coitus interruptus (withdrawal), an early method of birth control:

We got female captives in the war booty and we used to do coitus interruptus with them. So we asked Allah's Apostle about it and he said, "Do you really do that?" repeating the question thrice, "There is no soul that is destined to exist but will come into existence, till the Day of Resurrection." [8]

Here, the Prophet voices no concern about men having sex with captive women; instead he worries that they believe birth control circumvents God’s will. Sahih Bukhari contains several more narrations to the same effect. [9]

Other reports even indicate that the Prophet allowed men to sleep with their female slaves in a way that intentionally minimized their rights. In a hadith from Sahih Muslim, a companion explains to Muhammad that withdrawal is useful for a man “who has a slave-girl [...], but he does not like her to have conception so that she may not become umm walad.” [10] Being an umm walad – a concubine with a child by her master – elevated a slave's legal status; practicing withdrawal allowed men to enjoy their slaves' bodies while preventing these women from gaining additional rights. The Prophet’s only response to this was that withdrawal was unnecessary, because the birth of children “is something preordained.” [11] Another report in Sahih Muslim describes a man explaining to Muhammad, “I have a slave-girl who is our servant and she carries water for us and I have intercourse with her, but I do not want her to conceive.” The Prophet reportedly replied, “Practice 'azl(withdrawal), if you so like, but what is decreed for her will come to her.” [12] Similar reports are found in elsewhere in Sahih Muslim. [13]

For those who argue that sex with slaves in not a legitimate practice in Islam, the most troubling thing of all would be the fact that according to traditional biographies of the Prophet, he himself owned more than one concubine. One of them, a Coptic woman named Mariya, was allegedly given to Muhammad as a “present” by the ruler of Egypt. [14] Eminent historian Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari (d. 923) plainly describes Mariya as a “concubine,” [15] and Ismail ibn Kathir (d. 1373), relays a hadith explaining that Muhammad “consummated with Mariya since she was a slave.” [16] According to respected scholar Ibn Sa'd al-Baghdadi (d. 845), Muhammad freed Mariya after she gave birth to his child. [17] The second concubine was a Jewish woman named Rayhana. Ibn Kathir quotes several hadiths about her, including one in which the Prophet offers her the choice of either marrying him or accepting the following alternative, “If you wish to remain in my domain and for me to have intercourse with you by that right, then that I will do.” [18] Some hadiths say she married Muhammad, while many others claim she remained his concubine until death. [19]

Most Muslims reject the idea of men taking concubines, but many are unaware of – or in denial about – the toleration of this practice in classical Islamic law and the Prophetic tradition. There is widespread silence about this topic in contemporary Muslim discourse – “traditionalist” scholars are even removing unpalatable references to slavery from their “complete” translations of classical texts. [20] In the rare instances where scholars dodiscuss slavery and concubines, they make great efforts to show how much “gentler” slavery was among Muslims than among non-Muslims historically. But they’re missing the point: the majority of contemporary Muslims consider the ownership and sexual “use” of human beings to be morally repugnant, regardless of how politely it is done.

Lebanese author Amin Maalouf notes that, “Many types of behavior that are perfectly acceptable to a believer today would have struck his “co-religionists” in the past as inconceivable.” [21] The inverse also holds true. Is selective amnesia our way of avoiding the conflict between concubinage and our modern sensibilities?

Muslims need to recognize the realities of the Islamic tradition in order to decide what role it should play in modern life. If we recoil in disgust at the mention of men having sex with female slaves, then what should we make of the alleged actions of the early Muslims, or indeed, the Prophet himself? Can we call concubinage “un-Islamic” if classical scholars approved of it, and the Prophet reportedly engaged in it? What makes something “Islamic” in the first place?

If we want to develop a level of coherence in our beliefs as a global religious community, we must confront these questions head-on with clarity, candor and courage. Whatever interpretation we choose, let us acknowledge it as our own, not forgetting that the times we live in shape our religious assumptions just as much as Islam does.

Datuk Seri Najib Razak vowed today the federal government will staunchly block any attempts to enforce Islamic law, or hudud, effectively ending a budding debate on the subject that has pitted non-Muslim parties against their Muslim allies ahead of national polls.

The Islamic code is not suitable to be implemented because the government has to be realistic about the country’s current situation, the prime minister told reporters in Tanjung Tualang during a day-trip to Perak earlier today.

“If we ask the ulamas (Muslim clerics), Islamic law cannot be implemented unless we take into consideration the environment and the reality.

“Moreover, the aim of an administration according to Islam is based on maqasid syariah, which entails protecting the religion, life, moral and property, among others,” Najib was reported as saying by The Star Online.

The sixth PM insisted that elements of hudud have already been incorporated in the existing system “minus the extreme part”.

He added that the principle and objective of maqasid syariah could be championed under the existing legal system.

Hudud is a prickly subject in multicultural Malaysia where race and religion are closely-linked. The country’s 28-million population is also still haunted by the bloody racial riots of May 13, 1969.

Najib (picture) is the second PM to take a strong stand against hudud, after fourth prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who had blocked Kelantan’s attempts to implement the Islamic laws in the state.

Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat has since challenged Najib to revise the country’s top laws to allow the state implement hudud there.

Today, major dailies in the country front-paged the hudud flap involving parties on both sides of the political divide.

Mainstream newspapers appear to suggest that Pakatan Rakyat (PR) is now scrambling to contain its loss of support from the Malay community as a response to PAS deputy president Mohammad Sabu’s alleged remarks over Bukit Kepong tragedy.

But the exchanges have not been entirely across the aisle. Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s expressed support for hudud earlier this week also appears to have upset Barisan Nasional’s Chinese partners.

MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek has threatened pull his party out of the ruling coalition if senior ally, Umno, goes ahead with enforcing hudud. Gerakan has expressed the same threat.

On PR’s side, DAP has likewise maintained they will not support PAS’s longstanding bid to implement Islamic law.

Muhyiddin, who is also Umno deputy president, later tempered his remarks by saying it was not yet time to introduce such laws to multi-racial and multi-religious Malaysia.

Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also backed the introduction of hudud in Kelantan, which he said would not infringe upon non-Muslims’ rights

That saying of Imam Ali, one of the successors of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of God be upon him and all other prophets of God), was quoted in the United Nation's 2002 Arab Development Report. It encouraged Arab countries to take his example of establishing a regime based on justice and democracy.

It is true that Islam guides Muslims on all aspects of their lives, from encouraging modesty to prohibiting usury to instructing on governance. Islam also says Muslims must obey the laws of their land and does not allow its adherents to forcefully impose Islamic laws on any country, not even their own! Thus, you don't hear any of the 10 million Muslims living in this country advocating for Islamic legal law, or Shariah, inAmerica.

The posturing that anti-Shariah legislation, such as the bills introduced in February by Sen. Bill Ketron, R-Murfreesboro, and Rep. Judd Matheny, R-Tullahoma, is needed inTennessee to combat terrorism is flawed in many ways. (While the authors have proposed an amendment to remove religious references, the intention of the bill remains the same.) One, Shariah laws themselves prohibit acts of terrorism. So that would now make it a double negative. Secondly, there are already laws on the books to prevent people, regardless of their faith or ideology, from involvement in any type of terrorist activities. Thirdly, American Muslims, if left alone, do not engage in terrorism. In fact, they are on average more law-abiding as a group than the average American. Last but not least, if we study Tennessee history from its inception, it's obvious that most, if not all, acts of terrorism, including bombing, burning, lynching and even genocide, were committed by people who were not Muslims.

So why is one state after another introducing "anti-Shariah" legislation? Some say lawmakers are doing it to garner votes by playing off people's fears. Others say they are trying to distract people's attention from the real problems we are facing, such as increasing poverty, joblessness and homelessness.

But I think the roots of this bitter tree go much deeper than that. Political analyst Noam Chomsky once said we Americans have a bad habit of demonizing the group we are busy oppressing and exploiting. First the enemy was the "savage" Native Americans, next came the "subhuman" Africans and then the Japanese-American "spies." Now it's the Muslim "terrorists" as we endeavor to control more of the Middle East, the latest frontier being oil-rich Libya.

Unless Americans are made to fear and hate Muslims over here, they will not agree to invade, bomb, and rob them over there.

Most people weary of Islam and Muslims point to the tragedy of 9/11 to justify their anti-Muslim rhetoric and laws. Mr. Ketron once said 9/11 turned the pages of history. Well 2/11, the day the Egyptians ousted dictator Hosni-Mubarak, has shut the book on that ugly chapter by revolutionizing the image of Muslims all around the world. For 10 years, by flashing pictures of Osama bin Laden and others of similar ilk on the news, the media, politicians and their corporate sponsors repeatedly told the world who Muslims are and how they work. But now everybody knows the Muslim masses use peaceful means of protest, like we saw in Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, Yemen and like I am are doing here, to express ourselves.

The truth is Islamic radicalism was not a problem until we went to Afghanistan in the 1980s and trained Afghanis and others to fight against the Soviets. And homegrown Muslim terrorism was unheard of until government officials started hiring people to infiltrate mosques and entrap Muslims.

Continuing to support anti-Shariah laws for all the reasons I have stated is a grave injustice. The people of this great state are counting on their leaders to always do what is right and not what is convenient, popular or profitable. I would encourage our leaders to take a step back, study American history and U.S. foreign policies to develop a keen sense of insight, so they can distinguish between truth and falsehood and guide this state to unity, diversity and prosperity for all.

The next time we go to the ballot box in Tennessee, voters should heed the following advice of Imam Ali also included in the UN report mentioned above.

"Choose the best among your people to administer justice among them. Choose someone who does not easily give up, who is unruffled by enmities, someone who will not persist in wrong doings, who will not hesitate to pursue right once he knows it, someone whose heart knows no greed, who will not be satisfied with a minimum of explanation without seeking the maximum of understanding, who will be the most steadfast when doubt is cast, who will be the least impatient in correcting the opponent, the most patient in pursuing the truth, the most stern in meting out judgment, someone who is unaffected by flattery and not swayed by temptation and these are but few."

The implementation of hudud in the state of Kelantan must in all circumstances be subject to the maqasid al Shari’a, that is, the Higher Objectives of the Shari’a, the most paramount of which is to ensure justice for all, regardless of race, status or religion. This warrants the existence of Shari’a judges who are capable of dispensing justice without fear or favour and a Shari’a judicial system which is independent of political pressure or other kinds of influence that would impair its functions in the administration of justice.

As a Muslim, I am bound by the commandments of my religion including the injunctions as ordained in the Holy Qur’an. As I have stated before, the right to practice one’s faith is a fundamental freedom that is guaranteed by the Federal Constitution. In this regard, it must be stressed that non-Muslims are and must continue to be in all circumstances exempt from the Shari’a jurisdiction. This view is perfectly consistent with the position of the Pakatan Rakyat as laid out in the Orange Book:

“...to defend the Federal Constitution, to uphold the position of Islam as the religion of the Federation, to ensure that other religions may be professed and practiced fully, and to safeguard the special position of the Malays and the natives of Sabah and Sarawak as well as the interests of other races in line with Article 153.”

UMNO stoking with fire

We condemn the hypocrisy of UMNO and Barisan Nasional in exploiting the hudud issue for political mileage. Even more deplorable are the sinister machinations orchestrated by UMNO in attempting to stoke the fires of ethnic and religious tension by repeatedly playing up the issue in their media.

To the non-Muslim audience, they project an anti-Shari’a stance even on some occasions rubbishing it as a primitive system while to the Muslim audience; they relentlessly attack Pakatan Muslim leaders as being traitors to their religion and race by consorting with non-Muslim leaders. Without doubt these actions are part and parcel of the overall plan to drive a wedge in the Pakatan coalition and bring about internal strife and in the process hope to weaken the coalition and the chances of victory in the next elections.

I would like to stress that Pakatan Rakyat is a coalition built on the principle of consensus and mutual trust and respect. We hold firm to the conviction that any issue which affects the interest of the people must be discussed frankly in a civilized manner with the objective of seeking an amicable resolution. We also believe that each and every component party of the coalition should be given its legitimate right to explain its position on significant issues to its members.

Kem buaya darat. Mengikut cerita kononnya dalam dia sudah jadi isteri Najib dia masih berjumpa Rahim. Betul ke? Kalau betul, jahat sungguh awak ni…

Untuk lepaskan dirinya dari Rosmah dia cepat-cepat paskan Rosmah kepada Najib. Dia beri pengakuan kepada Rosmah, kalau dia baik dengan Najib dia boleh dapat kawasan balak. Negeri Pahang banyak balak, Melaka tidak ada balak.

Rahim bukan mudah dikenakan orang. Di Negeri Melaka ketika dia menjadi Ketua Menteri, dialah raja. Mengikut cerita orang-orang Melaka kononnya beliau pernah menghalau Pegawai-pegawai Majlis Ugama Melaka dan Polis dari bilik hotelnya di Hotel Ramada. Mereka datang menyerbu ke bilik hotel itu apabila terima laporan ada orang berkhalwat. Apabila sampai ke bilik itu yang di dapati berkhalwat ialah Ketua Menteri Melaka sendiri Rahim Thamby Chik dengan seorang gadis jurujual.

Najib walaupun buaya besar seperti Rahim Thamby Chik, kena dengan Rosmah dia kalah dan terduduk. Lupa diri, lupa anak bini. Balak Pahang pun dia berikan kepada Rosmah. Hotel Hyatt Kuantan menjadi tempat mereka berkendak tidak kira siang atau malam setiap kali Rosmah datang ke Kuantan.

Apabila Najib ke Kuala Lumpur mereka berkendak di Hotel Shangri-la kerana Najib tinggal di situ dan pejabat Rosmah di Bangunan SPK berhampiran dengan hotel itu.

Sejak dia mengadakan perhubungan sulit secara haram dengan Najib dia lupa terus kepada suami dan anak-anaknya.

Mengikut cerita orang, Rosmah, Najib dan Toh Puan Rahah masa pergi ke Mekkah kali kedua, mungkin untuk membuang dosa kononnya, semasa dia berjalan mengelilingi Kaabah, dikatakan terkena baling batu yang tidak tahu dari mana datangnya.

Were we ever surprised that things would turn out this way? Was it ever going to be a surprise that Prime Minister Najib Razak and wife Rosmah Mansor would apply to strike out the subpoena placed on their heads?

In the beginning, the couple refused to attend an interview to ascertain whether they were viable witnesses for the Sodomy II trial. They made it clear that they would only do so if a subpoena was served on them. Anwar's lawyers then applied for one, a subpoena was served and even-though the decision itself was a surprise; it was clear the motive in allowing it to happen was merely to ensure both Najib and Rosmah would never take the witness box, ever, in the Sodomy II trial.

Why is this so? Because this method to evade taking the witness stand was done before, back in 2001 by none other then ex-premier Mahathir Mohamad.

Back then, the prosecution was led by Gani Patail and he inadvertently colluded with the courts to allow the application to strike out Mahathir’s subpoena. The court decided that Mahathir was not a material witness to the 1998 sodomy trial, and thus his testimony was not relevant.

When the court decided to allow Mahathir to file an application to strike out the subpoena, the defence would have had to state in open court the relevance of the premier’s testimony to the ongoing sodomy trial. This would force the defence to reveal the evidence they had against Mahathir, something that clearly placed Anwar’s defence at a disadvantage.

Back in 2001

Lead prosecutor Gani Patail, invoking S136 of the Evidence Act, raised objections to the subpoena and said evidence to be sought from Mahathir was irrelevant to the trial. Under this section, the judge will have to rule whether evidence from a particular witness is relevant to the proceedings.

"There is no evidence that would connect the Prime Minister to the accused (Sukma). No evidence to show that the Prime Minister is a material witness in the sodomy act. He was not at the scene," Gani Patail said.

Failing to conceal his irritation, defence counsel Karpal Singh snapped: "It is not for the prosecution to state what evidence the Prime Minister is expected to give for the defence."

Arguing there is more than sufficient relevance, Karpal pointed out that an earlier witness, police officer SAC Musa Hassan, had testified that the principal witness in the sodomy trial, Azizan Abu Bakar, had met with Mahathir. Azizan, in his evidence, confirmed the meeting.

Karpal, raising his voice, accused the prosecution of trying to assist Mahathir by going the extra mile to prevent him from testifying.

"There is more than sufficient relevance for Mahathir to testify. So, why the fright? Why the clambering to the Prime Minister’s assistance to ensure he does not come to court?"

Acting for the PM

Repeatedly saying that he is "not acting for the Prime Minister", Gani Patail reminded the court it has the power and is in fact duty bound to ask the defence to show the relevancy of Mahathir’s testimony.

Gani Patail indeed has experience in twisting the law and the courts to his whims and fancy. More so now that he is the Attorney General. Most Malaysians will say there is no doubt that he was in direct consultation with Najib and Rosmah, and would have advised them every step in this case.

The same line of questioning Karpal had for Gani in 2001 can apply for Najib and Rosmah in 2011. Why the fright? Why the clambering by the AG and the courts to ensure that they do not come to court? Why the about-turns and demands and threats when the court of law is the best place to prove one’s innocence?

Come September 29th we will hear what the courts have to say about Najib’s bid to strike out the subpoena but much of the usual can be expected. This script has been played before and it will be re-played, striking once again at the soul of the Malaysian judiciary. Until when will we see true justice prevail? And not just for Anwar but for all. Hopefully, it will be in this life-time.

Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi advised Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today to clearly define his idea of a “winnable” candidate to ensure the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) will be represented by only the best in the coming national polls.

The retired fifth prime minister was responding to The Malaysian Insider’s story published earlier today: “Can win-ability save Umno?”

With the 13th general election looming, Najib has been urging BN component parties to nominate candidates based on their ability to win in an election.

“Please give me winnable candidates; I don’t care whether they are old, new or middle-aged as long as they can win,” the sixth PM was quoted as saying in a New Straits Times report in January this year, before the Sarawak election.

Najib’s directive to BN members, including lynchpin Umno, remains unchanged, which appears to have stumped some of the leaders or caused clashes with those lower down the party ladder.

The Umno politician popularly known as “Pak Lah” said Najib is the only person who can set the members right in scouting for election candidates “as Datuk Seri Najib will be the one to decide on the candidates”.

Abdullah said it was clear the candidate must be someone who can win over a crowd. He later conceded there were issues with “parachute candidates”, a term generally used to describe those who figure prominently at the national level but are usually disconnected to the grassroots.

“You cannot take someone who happens to belong, or has a certain position, in the party,” he said, and added: “The winnable candidate must be able to serve the people... and most importantly must be a person of integrity.”

BN leaders shared with The Malaysian Insider that for at least the past 30 years, candidates have always been chosen from a party’s senior middle-ranking officers, which has sometimes affected the results in favour of the government in the ballot boxes.
